Theatriki Etaireia Luxembourg (THEL) is the Greek Theatre Society of Luxembourg, which was established at the end of 1987 as a member of the Cultural Circle of the European Institutions in Luxembourg.
The purpose of THEL is, according to its statutes, the organisation of theatrical activities in Greek, as well as research and training in the field of performing arts and techniques. THEL's main activities include theatre shows, as well as theatre workshops and seminars.
Given that a theatre company ages and dies if it is not renewed, THEL is always interested in attracting "new blood" for its activities not only on stage but also offstage (stage management, sets, costumes, masks and many other elements of a theatrical production). In addition, THEL organizes every year weekly or week-end theatre workshops with various "masters" from Luxembourg, Greece or other countries. These workshops are aimed at THEL members as well as those who wish to participate in acting under the guidance of specialists. The subjects of the workshops vary from introduction to theatre practice to introduction to specific forms of theatre (e.g. mime art, puppetry), but also directing and creative writing.
Since its creation, the Greek Theatre Society has presented around thirty shows in Luxembourg and Brussels. These were plays both by Greek authors (Bost, Matesis, Anagnostaki, Kambanellis, Ritsos, Karras, Galanos, Kalogeropoulou, Kehaïdis - Haviara) and non-Greek authors (Shakespeare, Chekhov, Molière, Goldoni, Gogol, Ionesco, Feydeau, Vitrac, Cossa, Hachfeld, Ensler), as well as puppet shows, shadow plays, children's plays and musical shows.
THEL seeks to exploit and showcase the potential of Greeks living in Luxembourg and wishing to be actively involved in theatre performance. Its goal is to create and present theatre shows, both for the Greek and non-Greek speaking public, thanks to surtitles used in its productions.
By its continuous presence and successful activities, the Greek Theatre Society has become an essential and highly acclaimed component of Luxembourg's cultural life, beyond the boundaries of the European Institutions.
